چکیده

social imitation in autism [7], but further testing of the circumstances that drive children with autism to imitate would be valuable. Overall, our study leads to two important conclusions. First, studies of social interaction can examine the social component of imitation behaviour independent of the objectlearning component, and this can best be done using familiar objects. Second, children with autism do not show overimitation of actions on familiar objects. This specific difference in a behaviour linked to social affiliation and norm conformity is compatible with claims of abnormal social motivation in autism.

Cineradiography of Monkey Lip-Smacking Reveals Putative Precursors of Speech Dynamics

A key feature of speech is its stereotypical 5 Hz rhythm. One theory posits that this rhythm evolved through the modification of rhythmic facial movements in ancestral primates. If the hypothesis has any validity, then a comparative approach may shed some light. We tested this idea by using cineradiography (X-ray movies) to characterize and quantify the internal dynamics of the macaque monkey v...

Facial Expressions and the Evolution of the Speech Rhythm

In primates, different vocalizations are produced, at least in part, by making different facial expressions. Not surprisingly, humans, apes, and monkeys all recognize the correspondence between vocalizations and the facial postures associated with them. However, one major dissimilarity between monkey vocalizations and human speech is that, in the latter, the acoustic output and associated movem...

Monkeys are perceptually tuned to facial expressions that exhibit a theta-like speech rhythm.

Human speech universally exhibits a 3- to 8-Hz rhythm, corresponding to the rate of syllable production, which is reflected in both the sound envelope and the visual mouth movements. Artificial perturbation of the speech rhythm outside the natural range reduces speech intelligibility, demonstrating a perceptual tuning to this frequency band. One theory posits that the mouth movements at the cor...

Different yawns, different functions? Testing social hypotheses on spontaneous yawning in Theropithecus gelada

Here, we tested hypotheses about the potential functions of yawning based on its intensity and social contexts. Due to their spectrum intensity of yawns (covered teeth/YW1; uncovered teeth/YW2; uncovered gums/YW3), geladas are a good model species for this purpose. We suggest that yawns of different intensity can bear different information according to the performer, the context and the behavio...

Articulatory Strategies for Lip and Tongue Movements in Silent versus Vocalized Speech

In the context of Silent Speech Communication (SSC) development after total laryngectomy rehabilitation, tongue and lip movements were recorded with a portable ultrasound transducer and a CCD video camera respectively. A list of 60 French minimal-pairs and a list of 50 most frequent French words were pronounced in vocalized and silent mode by one speaker. Amplitude and timing of the articulator...
